Tabs have been a part of Facebook for almost as long as Facebook has existed. They were initially a much larger part of the site than they are today; they allowed for almost entire embedded websites and games within Facebook. Now, they're relegated to fringe features on the side of the page, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Facebook remove them in the next few years.
